Lion’s Mane Supplement: My 60-Day Experience
I am Christian Poulos, a neuroscience graduate and medical doctor. Though I’m not your doctor, and you should always consult your own healthcare provider before trying new supplements, I consider myself a bit of a human test subject. Intrigued by the numerous ads I encountered for Lion’s Mane, I decided to test it out to determine if it lives up to the hype from a neuroscience perspective. Here is what I found after taking 1.5 grams daily for 60 days.
Lion’s Mane is a medicinal mushroom that has gained significant popularity recently, frequently appearing in social media feeds. It is known for stimulating new brain cell growth, which can be beneficial for conditions related to memory and brain health, such as dementia. Interestingly, it was once believed that we couldn’t generate new brain cells after our teenage years, but that’s not the case anymore.
Notable Benefits
- Increased Energy: I felt a light, caffeine-like boost all day, which helped me stay productive.
- Reduced Rumination: As an overthinker, I noticed my thoughts were more relaxed and calm.
- Neuroinflammation Reduction: Lion’s Mane may reduce brain fog caused by poor sleep or substance use by lowering inflammation in the brain.
Additional Claims
Some studies suggest that Lion’s Mane can enhance the immune system, potentially leading to fewer illnesses and therefore allowing you to live a healthier, more active life.
Final Thoughts
- While I did experience some benefits like more energy and less rumination, I didn’t find the supplement compelling enough to buy it again.
- Many of Lion’s Mane’s potential brain benefits likely require longer-term use.
- There are other supplements that may offer more substantial benefits, and I will be reviewing those in future videos.
