Yorkshireman Turns Seychelles Island into National Park

Yorkshireman Turns Seychelles Island into National Park

Brendan Grimshaw’s Incredible Journey

After retiring as a newspaper editor in East Africa, Yorkshireman Brendan Grimshaw decided to make a significant change in his life in 1962. He visited the Seychelles and bought a small island called Moyenne for £8,000. This island, just half a mile wide, is located in the Indian Ocean.

Restoring an Island

With the help of a local teenager named Renee Antoine Lafortune, Brendan spent the rest of his days working hard to restore the overgrown island. He brought back its natural beauty and wildlife, including introducing giant tortoises. Over time, he added around 120 tortoises to the island.

Turning Down Tempting Offers

As the island thrived, wealthy investors offered Brendan $50 million to buy Moyenne and turn it into a luxury holiday spot. Brendan refused these offers because he had different plans. Despite having no children to pass the island on to, he ensured its future by signing a perpetual trust with the local Ministry of Environment.

Creating a Legacy

In 2009, Moyenne Island was transformed into a national park, preserving Brendan’s hard work and dedication. Brendan, often called a **real-life Robinson Crusoe**, passed away in 2012, but his legacy lives on. Today, the island is a tourist attraction overseen by the Moyenne Island Foundation. Up to 50 visitors can tour the island at any given time.
